The Faces of Dar-us-Sakina

Autism Awareness Month

Featuring Ahmed Algaswan

April 2024

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month this April, we are proud to spotlight Ahmed Algaswan and his remarkable family. Zahraa Alhelli, Ahmeds mother, graciously opened up to share their journey.

Ahmed's Story

Ahmed was born on September 3, 2013, in Baghdad, Iraq and his arrival brought immense joy to his whole family. In his first year of life, Ahmed was a smiley baby who reached developmental milestones with ease. Around his first birthday, the family moved to the US and his parents noticed changes to his behavior. "He started playing by himself, avoiding eye contact, and his crying and tantrums became more frequent," recalls Zahraa, his mother.

At age 2, Ahmed's pediatrician recommended speech therapy. As his speech improved, other areas lagged. Soon after, a diagnosis of autism at the UT Autism Clinic changed everything. Zahraa recalls this as the “single worst moment of my life, as well as a life-changing moment for our family”.

Following the diagnosis, Ahmed and his family embarked on a transformative journey with autism, engaging in a treatment plan that included speech therapy (ST), occupational therapy (OT), behavioral therapy, and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

Zahraa, a pediatric doctor herself, shares that even “as his mother, I was in denial and refused to accept his diagnosis.”

At age 3, Ahmed began attending school and the supportive school environment was instrumental in his progress. "He was fortunate to have such wonderful teachers and therapists who not only enriched our lives but also helped us overcome many of his challenges.” Zahraa reflects.

Over the years, Ahmed faced a range of challenges with speech, behavior, sleep problems, and more. Yet, he has consistently demonstrated that he is more resilient than any diagnosis could imply, surpassing expectations with his perseverance and strength.

Today, Ahmed is a joyful, friendly, and vibrant 10-year-old, always greeting the world with a smile. Despite the challenges, he has excelled in numerous ways. "Ahmed helps around the house and always comes home with fantastic news from school," shares Zahraa. "He loves math and is our 'Little Math Genius'! He's also keen on making new friends, though his best friend is his sister, Nabaa. Together, they're an unstoppable team!"

Discovering Dar-us-Sakina

From navigating a new country, culture, and language, to supporting Ahmed’s diagnosis without any family, the start of their journey in America was faced with immense resilience.

Zahraa shared that because of Ahmed's autism they felt isolated, less accepted in the community, and had no opportunities to meet people or make friends, “even things like going to the Masjid to attend prayer was difficult”.

In 2019, Zahraa sought guidance from Ahmed's doctor, demanding a reevaluation, hoping for a change in his diagnosis. Through the doctor's recommendation, she connected with Ms. Judy Blake from Family2Family, whose support and introduction to Dar-us-Sakina marked a turning point for their family.

Dar-us-Sakina became their safe haven. Within its embrace, Zahraa's family found the love and support they desperately needed. It was there that they encountered a community that would become their allies, friends, and extended family.

For Ahmed, it was a place of discovery and belonging. Sunday school, lovingly dubbed "Allah school" by Ahmed, became a highlight of his week. Here, he found joy in the teachings of Wudu and Salah, alongside the companionship of devoted teachers and friends.

For Zahraa, the journey with Dar-us-Sakina was transformative. Engaging in support groups and volunteering opened doors to profound connections and personal growth. Surrounded by mothers turned confidantes, she gleaned invaluable insights, evolving into a stronger, more relaxed caregiver.

Ahmed's presence in our lives has been an extraordinary journey, one that has profoundly shaped and enriched us. He remains our miracle, a constant source of joy with his infectious smile. Our hearts overflow with gratitude to Allah SWT for blessing us with Ahmed, a cherished gift that continues to fill our lives with love and wonder.
