In a heartfelt interview, Umara Raza opened up about her and her daughter Leena’s inspiring journey navigating the world of special needs, sharing how Dar-us-Sakina has become a part of their story and support system.

Discovering Dar-us-Sakina

After moving to Houston in 2020, Umara and her family sought a nurturing environment where their daughter, Leena, could explore her faith and spirituality at her own pace. Upon learning about Dar-us-Sakina, they promptly registered and were welcomed into a community rich with resources and inspirational individuals.

Leena's Diagnosis and Early Support

Leena was born profoundly deaf, a diagnosis that initially brought shock and sadness to the family. With the assistance of an early intervention team in Ohio and connections within the special needs community, they embraced their role as Leena's advocates. “We then knew that the sky is the limit and we had to be Leena's biggest advocates" shares Umara. Later, when Leena was diagnosed with autism, the established support system enabled the family to navigate this new challenge with resilience.

Impactful Programs at Dar-us-Sakina

The Sunday school program at DUS has been particularly transformative for Leena. Her enthusiasm for the Sunday School classes, even expressing disappointment during summer breaks, highlights the program's positive influence.“We finally have the positive attention we deserve, and Leena has a space where she can thrive” shares Umara. The dedication of the Sunday school team has provided Leena with a space to learn and grow spiritually.

Overcoming Societal Challenges

Umara acknowledges that societal perceptions often underestimate the capabilities of individuals with special needs. Through its advocacy efforts, DUS has played a pivotal role in changing these perceptions, showcasing the strengths and contributions of the special needs community. This shift has brought about a more positive and inclusive environment for families like Umara's.

Advice for Other Parents from Umara

“To any parent starting their special needs journey, here’s what I’ve learned:

  • Reframe your perspective. Remove the word “disability” from your vocabulary. Our children are full of unique abilities and will surprise us in the most beautiful ways.
  • Advocate relentlessly. Never give up on your child’s potential. Celebrate every victory, no matter how small or big.
  • Avoid comparisons. Each child’s journey is their own. Embrace it and cherish the privilege of being part of their unique path.
  • Find your community. Surround yourself with people who understand, support, and uplift you.”
